Financial Aid for Graduate Students
Nearly all graduate students qualify for federal financial aid — regardless of age. Here’s what you need to know.
Federal Student Aid
One of the most common misconceptions about returning to school later in life is that financial aid is only for young students. The truth is that 99% of the population is eligible for federal student aid. There is no age limit on federal financial aid for graduate education.
Graduate students can borrow through two primary federal loan programs:
- Direct Unsubsidized Loans — Available to all graduate students regardless of financial need. Interest accrues from the date of disbursement.
- Grad PLUS Loans — Federal loans that cover the remaining cost of attendance not covered by other aid. Requires a credit check, but options exist even with adverse credit history.
99% Eligible
Nearly all Americans are eligible for federal student aid for graduate school. Age, retirement status, and Social Security income do not disqualify you. If you are accepted to an accredited program, you can almost certainly receive aid.
FAFSA — The Free Application for Federal Student Aid
The FAFSA is the single form required to access federal financial aid. It collects information about your income and assets to determine your eligibility for loans and, in some cases, grants or institutional aid.
For many adults over 60, the FAFSA process is simpler than expected. If you are retired and living on Social Security or a pension, your income profile often qualifies you for the maximum loan amounts available.
We help you navigate every step of the FAFSA — from creating your FSA ID to submitting the application and understanding your award letter.
Approximately $20,000+ Per Year in Living Expenses
Graduate students can borrow not only tuition costs but also approximately $20,000 per year in living expenses for up to 2 years. This covers housing, food, transportation, and other costs of attendance — providing meaningful financial support while you study.
No Age Discrimination
Federal law prohibits age discrimination in education. You have the same rights as any student — the same access to financial aid, the same academic opportunities, and the same protections. No school can deny you admission or aid based on your age.
In fact, many online programs actively welcome older adults because of the perspective and life experience they bring to classroom discussions and collaborative projects.
Your Rights Are Protected
The Age Discrimination Act of 1975 prohibits discrimination on the basis of age in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. This includes every accredited college and university that participates in federal financial aid programs.
